Is it ok to eat steaks that were defrosted twice?

I thawed out some steaks in the refrigerator for 48 hours but now I can't cook them. Is it ok to freeze them and thaw again? I don't think this is safe to do but I just want to make sure before I give them to the neighbor to cook.
