Uninstall windows media player?

I have windows vista. I want to uninstall windows media player because I am having problems. dont know what version of WMP I have. I tried installing WMP 11, but it said I had the most updated version. It's not in add/remove programs and i tried deleting the file from location, but it said that I needed permission, but I'm signed in with my administrator account. I don't want to reformat my computer. please help 10 pts for best solution.
